ST. CLOUD, Minn. – No. 2 ranked and conference leading St. Cloud State put together a pair of big offensive games to earn a sweep of Southwest Minnesota State on Sunday at Faber Field. The Huskies won the opener 12-1 and then scored nine unanswered runs to pick up a 14-4 victory in game two.
SCSU (33-3, 17-3 NSIC) won the last three games of the four-game series and handed SMSU (14-18, 7-9 NSIC) its first doubleheader sweep in league play this season. Prior to today, SMSU had split nine straight doubleheaders, including seven in conference play.
In the opener, SCSU scored five first inning runs and went on collect 16 hits off of two SMSU pitchers.
Austin Stubbs belted his team-leading 10th home run of the season in the third inning for SMSU's only run. The Mustangs finished with just five hits and committed four errors.
Alex Jorgensen (0-5) started on the mound for SMSU and allowed six runs on seven hits in 1 1/3 innings.
Travis McGlauflin pitched the final 4 2/3 innings, allowing six runs (one earned) on nine hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
In game two, SCSU jumped to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but SMSU answered to take its only lead of the game in the second inning.
Brandan Alfson worked a one-out walk and moved up to second on a single by
Brian Redemske. A walk to
Derek Branson loaded the bases before
Cole VanderBeek hit a two-run double to make the score 3-2. A fielder's choice ground out by
Tanner Neale and error by the SCSU shortstop plated two more runs to give the Mustangs a 4-3 advantage.
SMSU maintained the lead until the third when SCSU took advantage of two Mustang errors to score a pair of unearned runs and regain a 5-4 lead.
SCSU added to the lead with a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to knock out SMSU starter
Jake Matthys and build an 8-4 lead.
The Huskies then ended the game via run-rule in the eighth with a two-run home run and a grand slam off of two Mustang relief pitchers.
SMSU was held to just six hits in the game with Alfson finishing 3 for 3 with a run scored.
Matthys (0-6) allowed eight runs (six earned) on 14 hits in 4 2/3 innings with two walks.
Colton Smith, the second of four SMSU pitchers, tossed 2 1/3 hitless innings with one walk and one strikeout.
Southwest Minnesota State, which completed its 12-game road trip today, returns to Alumni Field on Wednesday to take on the University of Sioux Falls for a doubleheader starting at 1:30 p.m.
