Mustangs split with Cougars on Thursday

MARSHALL, Minn. — The Southwest Minnesota State softball team took on the University of Sioux Falls and suffered a 6-1 loss in game one before winning game two, 5-2 to split the series on Thursday.
 
USF (22-18, 8-12) wasted no time as its second batter hit a homer down the left-field line to give the Cougars an early 1-0 start.
 
The Cougars added three runs in the top of the second to lead 4-0.
 
SMSU (22-20, 11-9) finally got on the board in the fourth inning after Alysse Luttmann doubled to left center after battling at the plate, which scored Katelyn Kalkman.
 
Sioux Falls added a pair of runs in the seventh from a home run and an error by pitcher Erin McDurmont to seal the 6-1 win.
 
Luttmann lead the Mustang offense finishing 2 for 3 with an RBI.
 
McDurmont came in to relieve Alex O'Connor after two innings and finished the game striking out two batters and walking just one. O'Connor suffered the loss after giving up four runs on six hits.
 
In game two, the Cougars started with energy as they scored in the first and the top of the third inning to lead 2-0 going into the bottom of the third.
 
The Mustangs brought a runner around to score after an error by the pitcher in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit to just a run.
 
SMSU didn't stop there, as they opened the scoring up in the fifth after Madisson Chadwick singled to left center and advanced to second on a fielding error along with scoring Kalkman and Elissa Reinsma to give the Mustangs a 3-2 lead.
 
Kailey Hanson joined the run with a single and another fielding error on the play to end up on third while also scoring Chadwick. Jazmyne Neely added to the scoring as she singled at the following at bat, which score Hanson from third.
 
The Mustang defense held off the Cougars to earn the win in game two and the series split.
 
Kalkman and Luttmann finished 2 for 3 with Kalkman scoring two runs. Chadwick and Neely both recorded an RBI in the win.
 
McDurmont picked up the win after pitching a complete game with a strike out and gave up six hits and two runs.
 
Southwest Minnesota State will host Minnesota Crookston tomorrow at 2 p.m. The doubleheader will also be a Cancer Awareness Day.
