SMSU softball rolls past Minnesota Crookston

MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State softball team combined for 25 hits in the sweep against Minnesota Crookston after winning game one, 10-2 (5) followed by game two 6-2 on Friday afternoon.
 
The doubleheader was played as a Cancer Awareness Day with all proceeds donated to the Gretta Geist family.
 
UMC (4-36, 0-22 NSIC) threatened early in game one after a two-run homerun to left field gave the Golden Eagles an early 2-0 lead.
 
SMSU (24-20, 13-9 NSIC) didn't falter as they cut the lead down to one in the bottom of the second after Elissa Reinsma laid down a sac bunt to score Kailey Hanson from third.
 
In the third inning, the Mustang took the lead after a pair of doubles from Karmann Carroll and Taylor Koloc to score two runners and lead 4-2
 
SMSU added to its lead in the fourth after Alysse Luttmann singled to score Reinsma followed by Madisson Chadwick doubling to left center to score Luttmann. Hanson continued the scoring with a double down the left field line to score Chadwick and scored after Jazmyne Neely hit a single to center. Neely came around to score on a double steal attempt to give the Mustangs a commanding 9-2 lead. Hanson walked at her next at bat with the bases loaded to walk in the 10th run and give the Mustangs the win by the run rule.
 
Alex O'Connor (16-12) pitched the five-inning game and picked up the win giving up just three hits and two runs, while striking out six and walking none.
 
Koloc had a day at the plate as she finished 3 for 3 with one RBI and a double. Chadwick, Neely and Carroll all finished 2 for 3 with Neely and Carroll scoring two runs each.
 
In game two, the Mustangs used a huge first inning to jump on top 5-0 after the first inning and would hold the lead the rest of the game.
 
Hanson singled to right field for third RBI of the day to score Katelyn Kalkman. Neely also singled at the following at bat to score Luttmann and Hanson followed it with a single by Carroll to score Neely. Koloc closed off the first inning of scoring with a double to left field that score Carroll and gave the Mustangs a 5-0 lead.
 
The Golden Eagles got on the board in the fourth  but could not add any more runs.
 
SMSU added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth after Luttmann singled to score Erica Downing.
 
Luttmann, Hanson and Koloc all finished 2 for 3 from the dish along with Neely recording two RBIs.
 
Erin McDurmont hurled the complete game giving up five hits and just one run, while striking out five and walking three batters.
 
Southwest Minnesota State will host Bemidji State tomorrow at noon for Senior Day.
