> Game 2 Box FAYETTE, Iowa – Southwest Minnesota State left 15 runners on base and failed to hold a late lead in falling 7-6 to Upper Iowa in game two of a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader and earn a split of the two games at Robertson Woods Field on Saturday.
SMSU's Brian Redemske recorded a career-high four hits, while Mitch Wurm earned his team-leading fifth win of the season in leading the Mustangs to a 12-6 victory in game one.
In game two, SMSU (16-20, 9-11 NSIC) held a 6-3 lead in the seventh inning, but UIU (16-20, 8-14 NSIC) rallied with a single run in the seventh, two in the eighth and one in the ninth to earn the walk-off victory.
The Mustangs has plenty of chances to add to the lead, but left the bases loaded in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings.
SMSU opened the scoring in the first with a two-out RBI double by Jarred Carlson to score Redemske—who started the game with a hit by pitch.
The Mustangs made it 2-0 in the third as Carlson once again hit a two-out RBI double to score Tanner Neale.
The Peacocks took the lead in the fourth, taking advantage of one SMSU error, three walks and a hit by pitch to score three runs to build a 3-2 lead.
SMSU came right back in the fifth, as Austin Stubbs belted his team-leading 11th home run of the season to tie the game, before Jason Minett put SMSU in front with an RBI double to score Carlson. Cole VanderBeek later hit a run-scoring single to plate to score Minett and give SMSU a 5-3 advantage.
Redemske gave SMSU a 6-3 lead in the seventh with an RBI base hit to score Minett, but it was all UIU after that.
UIU scored a run in the seventh off of SMSU relief pitcher Travis McLaughlin, then tied the game with a two-out, two-run single off of Jake Leighton to tie the game at 6-6.
In the bottom of the ninth, UIU's Adam Budron hit the walk-off, two-out RBI single on a 1-2 pitch to push across the game-winning run.
Leighton (2-1) took the loss, tossing the final 1 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on three hits.
Jimmy Callahan started for SMSU and lasted 3 2/3 innings, giving up three runs (one earned) on one hit, but walked four and hit one batter.
Minett led SMSU's 11-hit effort in game two going 3 for 5 with two runs scored, while Redemske, Carlson and Shane Sellner each finished with two hits.
In the opener, SMSU scored six runs in the first inning and built a 9-3 lead after three innings, to cruise to the win.
The Mustang started the game with five straight singles and took advantage of two Peacock errors to take the six-run lead.
UIU scored two in the bottom of the first, but SMSU answered in the third with an RBI single by Redemske and a two-run single by Patrick Rients to make the score 9-2.
Redemske would later add to the Mustang lead in the fourth with a two-run single pushing the margin to 11-3.
The support was plenty for Wurm (5-1), who tossed the seven-inning complete gave, allowing six runs (four earned) on 11 hits with four strikeouts and no walks.
Redemske closed the game reaching base all five times, finishing 4 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Minett and Rients also collected two hits each for SMSU, which finished the game with 13 hits.
The teams will complete the four-series tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
