MARSHALL, Minn. – Augustana College snapped Southwest Minnesota State's three-game winning streak with a doubleheader sweep on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field. The Vikings won the opener in eight innings 5-1, then jumped to an early 9-0 lead in game two and cruised to 12-4 victory.
Augustana (26-15, 17-9 NSIC) has won eight straight and 13 of the last 14 meetings between the two teams. Southwest Minnesota State drops to 19-23 overall, 12-14 NSIC.
The Vikings closed the doubleheader collecting 34 hits, including hitting three home runs in game two.
The two teams conclude the four-game series tomorrow with a doubleheader in Sioux Falls, S.D., starting at 1:30 p.m.
In the opener, the Vikings snapped a scoreless game in the fourth inning with a single, a stolen base and a one-out RBI single by Patrick Fiala.
SMSU was held in check by Augustana starting pitcher Ryan Hamilton, until rallying in the seventh.
Patrick Rients started the frame with a single before moving to second on a wild pitch. A
Jarred Carlson ground out moved Rients to third, before
Brandan Alfson hit a sac fly to right field to score Rients and send the game to extra innings.
The tie didn't last long as Augustana regained the lead in the eighth inning putting together five hits and one walk to score four runs and build a 5-1 advantage.
SMSU was held to just four hits in the game by Hamilton, who struck out nine batters and walked two. The complete game victory was Hamilton's second over SMSU this season. He defeated SMSU 4-2 in a non-conference game on March 13.
Mitch Wurm tossed the first seven innings for SMSU giving up one run on 11 hits with six strikeouts and one walk in earning a no-decision.
Colton Smit (3-1), who came on in relief in the eighth, took the loss, allowing four runs on five hits with two walks.
In game two, the Vikings jumped to a 4-0 lead in the first inning highlighted by a three-run homer from Alex Fink.
Fink then blasted another three-run home in the second to cap a five-run inning and push the Viking lead to 9-0.
SMSU got on the board in the home half of the second as

Trailing 10-2 in the sixth, SMSU pushed across two runs on run-scoring singles by both Alfson and Redemske.
Redemske, Minett and Branson led SMSU's nine-hit attack with two hits each.
Jimmy Callahan (2-2) started for SMSU and suffered the loss allowing nine runs on 10 hits with one strikeout.
Alex Jorgensen pitched the final four innings giving up three runs on eight hits.
