DULUTH, Minn. – Brandan Alfson tossed six strong innings, while Jake Leighton pitched the final three innings for his third save of the season, to lead Southwest Minnesota State to a 6-5 victory over Minnesota Duluth in game two of a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader at Wade Stadium on Wednesday.
In the opener, Minnesota Duluth (14-10, 8-6 NSIC) recorded 16 hits and took advantage of 12 walks and three hit by batters by SMSU pitchers to earn a 22-0 victory.
In the nightcap, Alfson (2-1) allowed just three runs (two earned) on six hits with six strikeouts and two walks. Leighton allowed two runs on three hits, but recorded five strikeouts to record his third save of the season.
SMSU (13-15, 6-6 NSIC) scored two runs in the first as Tanner Neale scored on a wild pitcher, while Jarred Carlson hit an RBI ground out to score Austin Stubbs.
Leading 2-1 in the third, Patrick Rients led-off with a walk and came around to score one batter later on a double by Stubbs. A single by Carlson put runners on the corners, before Shane Sellner scored Stubbs with a ground out. Jason Minett and Brian Redemske both walked to load the bases, before Derek Branson coaxed a bases loaded walk to score Carlson and give SMSU a 5-1 lead.
SMSU added to the lead in the fifth as Minett doubled to start the frame and later scored on a two-out fielding error by the UMD third baseman.
UMD cut into the lead with single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to make the score 6-4. The Bulldogs hit a one-out solo home run in the ninth to cut the deficit to 6-5, but Leighton closed the game with a strikeout and ground out to seal the victory.
SMSU had just five hits in game two with Stubbs finishing 2 for 5 with two runs scored and an RBI.
UMD relief pitcher Marcus Fredrickson came on with two outs in fifth inning and retired all 13 SMSU batters he faced to keep the game close.
In the opener, SMSU was shutout for the first time since April 22, 2014, and allowed 20 or more runs for the first time since April 15, 2013.
SMSU had five hits in the contest, with Rients, Stubbs, Alfson, Redemske and Branson each collecting one hit.
Travis McGlauflin (1-2) started on the mound for SMSU but left the game with two outs in the first inning, allowing two runs on five hits with three walks.
Southwest Minnesota State concludes its 12-game road trip this Saturday and Sunday with a four-game series at No. 2 and NSIC-leading St. Cloud State University (30-2, 14-2 NSIC). Saturday's doubleheader begins at 1 p.m. at Faber Field.
