Game 2 Box Score MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State University softball team used a three-run seventh inning rally to defeat Wayne State 4-3 in game one, but fell in 5-2 in game two on Wednesday.
The doubleheader was originally scheduled to be played in Wayne, Neb., but was moved to Marshall due to poor field conditions.
SMSU, which was the visiting team on the scoreboard, trailed 3-1 into the top of the seventh inning.
Elissa Reinsma led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on a passed ball. With Reinsma on third and one out, Alyssa Luttmann smacked an RBI single to center field to score Reinsma and on the play the WSC center fielder misplayed the ball allowing Luttmann to round the bases and tie the game at 3-3. Following a strikeout,
Kailey Hanson walked and moved up to second on a single by
Jazmyne Neely.
Karmann Carroll then stepped up and delivered a run-scoring single to plate Hanson and give SMSU a 4-3 lead.
Alex O'Connor allowed a one-out single in the seventh, but closed the game with a fly out and ground out, to secure the complete game victory. O'Connor allowed three runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and no walks in the first game.
WSC took a 2-0 lead in the third before SMSU rallied with a run in the fourth on an RBI single by
Taylor Chavez to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Wildcats added to their lead with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth, before SMSU responded with the game-winning rally.
In the second game, WSC scored three runs in the first inning and added an additional run in the third inning to lead 4-0 after three frames.
The Mustangs got on the board in the fourth inning after Luttmann tripled to right center to lead off the Mustangs and scored after
Madisson Chadwick doubled to right center in the following at bat.
The Wildcats added a run in the bottom of the fourth to lead 5-1.
SMSU tried to start another comeback in the top of the seventh after Chavez flied out to right field for a sac fly to score a run, but came up short falling 5-2.
Carroll and Chadwick finished 3 for 7 in the doubleheader each with an RBI and a double and two doubles, respectfully. Luttmann went 2 for 6 from the plate with a pair of runs scored, a triple and an RBI. Chavez also recorded two RBIs in the twin bill.
O'Connor (13-9) pitched a complete game, giving up nine hits and five runs (four earned) while striking out two and walked just one.
Southwest Minnesota State will head to Minnesota Duluth on Saturday for an 11 a.m. start, before playing St. Cloud State on Sunday with the first pitch at 1 p.m.
