SMSU goes 2-0 in day one at the Premier

DENVER — No. 2 Southwest Minnesota State volleyball team recorded its sixth win of the season after recording a 2-0 record in the first day of the Colorado Premier Challenge. SMSU defeated Colorado Mesa in a hard fought 3-2 match before defeating Regis (Colo.) 3-0 on Friday night on the campus of Regis University.

SMSU did not back down in Friday afternoon's match, as it defeated Colorado Mesa by scores of 20-25, 25-23, 18-25, 25-21, 15-9 to start the Challenge.
 
Sarah Parker led the Mustang attack as she grounded a team-high 14 kills while hitting .632. Eisha Oden and Abbey Thissen added 13 kills each to help pace the SMSU offense that finished hitting .246 (61-21-138).
 
Whitney Burmeister and Megan Larson tallied 12 digs apiece while Larson racked up 51 assists to notch her fourth straight double-double and fourth of the season.
 
The Mustang defense recorded 14 total blocks that was led by Oden with a career-high 10 blocks (five solo blocks and five assisted). Oden's previous career-high for blocks was eight.
 
SMSU vs. Regis
SMSU pushed its winning streak to six to remain undefeated so far this season after sweep Regis by scores of 25-18, 25-16, 25-14 on Friday night.
 
Abbey Thissen paved the way for the Mustang offense as the senior recorded 11 kills while hitting .308. Sarah Parker and Eisha Oden each added nine kills and four blocks.
 
Megan Larson recorded 14 digs while also dishing out 41 assist for another double-double—her fifth of the season.
 
SMSU finished with nine blocks to Regis' three and held the Rangers to just a .042 hitting percentage.
 
SMSU (6-0) will continue with day two of the Premier tomorrow playing Ferris State University at 1 p.m. (CDT).
