SMSU suffers first loss to Ferris State, defeats No. 1 Tampa

DENVER — No. 2 Southwest Minnesota State volleyball team suffered a 3-1 loss to No. 13 Ferris State Saturday afternoon but rebounded in the final game of the Challenge. The Mustangs defeated defending national champions, Tampa, 3-1 Saturday night to finish the Colorado Premier Challenge with a 3-1 record.
 
SMSU vs. Ferris State
Southwest Minnesota State suffered a 3-1 loss to No. 13 Ferris State by scores of 25-20, 23-25, 25-20, 26-24, for its first loss of the season.
 
SMSU was held to a .111 hitting percentage—its lowest of the season—while Ferris State put up 11 blocks to the Mustangs five.
 
Eisha Oden paced the Mustang attack as she floored 17 kills, while Abbey Thissen added 12.
 
Megan Larson recorded an efficient game as the sophomore recorded her sixth straight double-double and in the process set a career-high 27 digs—previous recorded was 18—and dished out 44 assists. Thissen and Whitney Burmeister also added 17 and 16 digs, respectfully.
 
SMSU vs. Tampa
No. 2 Southwest Minnesota State University held on for a four-set victory over No. 1 Tampa on Saturday night at the Colorado Premier. SMSU won by set scores of 28-26, 25-19, 24-26, 26-24.
 
Abbey Thissen recorded her first 20-plus-kill match of the season to earn her first double-double of the year as the Clara City native grounded 21 kills and recorded 10 digs. Eisha Oden and Sarah Parker added to the Mustang offense with 15 and 12 kills, respectfully.
 
Megan Larson recorded 52 assists in the win, while tallying 11 digs for her seventh double-double. Whitney Burmeister led the team with 25 digs while Kaylee Burmeister recorded 14.
 
The Tampa defense controlled the net as the Spartans recorded 18 total blocks to the Mustangs eight.
