SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Senior
Kendahl Fisher broke the school record for career assists in Southwest Minnesota State's 2-0 win over Sioux Falls on Friday night. It was the conference opener for both teams. Fisher recorded her first assist and goal of season and in the process, broke the school record for career assists with 26, previously set by Nadia AbuAyed (2001-04).
The win was also the first for SMSU first-year head coach
Erin Kasmarik-Mallett.
The Mustangs found the back of the net for the first time this season in the 26th minute after
Kylie Redmond put one past the Cougar goalkeeper after a pass from Fisher to put SMSU up 1-0.
After the break, Fisher added a goal in the 72nd minute after the ball was failed to be cleared by the Cougar defense.
SMSU held off USF the rest of the game to record the first win of the 2015 season. Southwest Minnesota State recorded 15 shots to Sioux Falls' 12 and seven to six shots on goal, respectfully.
Kristy Leopold recorded her second shutout of her career in her fifth career start at SMSU.
SMSU (1-1-1) will return to Marshall and to face Southwest Baptist (Mo.) on Sunday for a non-conference match at 11 a.m. for the 2015 home opener.
