Parker leads SMSU to pair of Saturday victories

PENSACOLA, Fla. — No. 3 Southwest Minnesota State volleyball team finished with a pair of wins at the West Florida Tournament on Saturday with victories over Saint Leo (Fla.) and Missouri-St. Louis. SMSU took down the Lions this morning in four sets, powered by Sarah Parker's career-high 22 kills while hitting .613. Parker followed her performance with another 15 kills in the sweep over Missouri St. Louis Saturday afternoon to give SMSU a 4-0 record to start the season.
 
SMSU vs. Saint Leo (Fla.)
SMSU kept its momentum going from Friday night into Saturday as it defeated Saint Leo by scores of 25-20, 25-16, 23-25, 28-26.
 
Sarah Parker drilled a career-high 22 kills and finished with a .613 hitting percentage to lead the Mustangs, while Eisha Oden added 13 kills and Abbey Thissen recorded 12 kills to pace an SMSU offense that finished hitting .281 (58-19-139). Parker's previous career-high for kills was 21 last seasons versus Minnesota Crookston.

Whitney Burmeister racked up a match-high 19 digs, while Megan Larson finished with 11 digs and dished out 44 assists to record her second double-double of the season.

SMSU was strong at the net, finishing with 11 blocks, led by Parker's one block solo and four assists.

SMSU vs. Missouri St. Louis
Southwest Minnesota State continued to control the pace in the final game as it defeated Missouri St. Louis in straight sets by scores of 25-22, 25-17, 25-17 to finish 4-0 in the tournament.
 
Parker had another dominating match as she recorded a team-high 15 kills while hitting .538. Thissen added 13 kills while Oden and Kaylee Burmeister each finished with eight.
 
Larson powered the offense with 47 assists while also tallying 10 kills for her third double-double of the tournament and 15th of her career. Whitney Burmeister posted a match-high 20 digs, while Parker added three solo blocks and three assists.
 
 SMSU finished hitting .352—highest of the season—while posting nine total blocks.
