Hot shooting drops Mustangs at Wayne State

WAYNE, Neb. —
The Southwest Minnesota State women's basketball team suffered a 88-59 loss at Wayne State College on Saturday in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play.
 
SMSU (3-10, 1-7 NSIC) finished shooting 36.4 percent from the floor on 24 of 66 attempts, while added 9 of 16 from the free throw line. WSC (6-6, 3-4 NSIC) scored on 32 of 63 attempts to finish shooting 50.8 percent—its second-highest finish of the season.
 
Lauren Hedlund led the Mustang offense, scoring 22 points on 9 of 19 attempts and added 4 of 6 from the charity stripe. Hope Bonlander contributed 15 points on 6 of 13 attempts, while Annessa Rosch scored 10.
 
The WIldcats held a 42-36 rebound advantage, included a 12-7 advantage in second-chance points. Hedlund was a rebound shy of her second double-double of the season, as she paced the Mustangs with nine rebounds, while Bonlander pulled down six.
 
Both teams traded baskets in the first quarter, but Wayne State went on to take a seven-point lead after the first 10 minutes after shooting 50 percent (8 of 16) from the floor to Southwest Minnesota State's 37.5 percent (6 of 16). The Wildcats continued to hold control in the second quarter, as they built a double-digit lead following a 9-2 run to end the quarter leading 38-27.
 
Bonlander led all scorers at the break with 10 points on 4 of 8 from the floor, while Hedlund added nine points on 4 of 11 attempts and grabbed a team-high five rebounds. SMSU finished the first half shooting 40 percent (12 of 30), while WSC shot 43.8 percent (14 of 32).
 
Wayne State continued its hot shooting in the second half as they finished shooting 58.1 percent in the half. The Wildcats pushed its lead to its largest of the game at the time, following back-to-back 3-pointers to lead 55-30 with 5:43 left in the third quarter.

WSC continued to control the game as it limited the SMSU offense to just two points in the last three minutes and 30 seconds. The Wildcats pushed its lead to its largest of the game at 86-57 with 2:10 left to secured the win.
 
Southwest Minnesota State will face Augustana University tomorrow starting at 3 p.m., at the Sioux Falls Arena.
