Mustang late rally falls short

ST. CLOUD, Minn. —
The Southwest Minnesota State men's basketball team suffered its fourth-straight road loss, as St. Cloud State put together a 22-10 run late in the first half to help defeat the Mustangs 103-94 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action.
 
SMSU (10-10, 6-9) finished shooting 45.8 percent (33 of 72) from the field and 81.8 percent (18 of 22) from the charity stripe. SCSU (11-10, 8-7) shot 53.2 percent (33 of 62) from the floor and 89.7 percent (26 of 29) from the free-throw line.
 
SMSU converted 14 offensive boards into 23 points and controlled the paint with a 36-26 point advantage in the box.
 
Ryan Bruggeman lead the Mustangs with 18 points on 4 of 10 shooting and 8 of 8 from the stripe. Joey Bartlett scored 13 points on 4 of 12 shooting, including three 3-pointers. Mitch Weg scored 11 points on 5 of 8 attempts and pulled down 11 boards to record his fourth double-double of the season and seventh of his career.
 
SMSU quickly jumped out to a seven-point lead to start the game, but SCSU would fight back to tie the game at 15-all with 15:35 left in the first half. SMSU would retake the lead and build a 10-point lead—largest of the game—following a Taylor Schafer 3-pointer with 4:26 left to play. SCSU would not let up as the Huskies put together a 13-3 run to tie the game up with 1:23 left to play in the half. SCSU closed the half on a 7-4 run to lead at the break, 57-54.
 
Both teams traded baskets to start the second half, but SCSU lead 82-68 with 11:32 left to play and built its largest lead of the game at 84-70 with 10:28 left to play. SMSU would put together a 12-4 run to trail by just five with 5:47 left to play and again with 41 seconds left but could not take the lead. The Huskies would go on to win 103-94.
 
Southwest Minnesota State will face Minnesota Duluth at 6 p.m., tomorrow night.
