ST. CLOUD, Minn. — St. Cloud State outscored Southwest Minnesota State 23-6 in the second quarter to defeat the Mustangs 78-53 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's basketball.
SMSU (3-18, 1-14) finished shooting 34.5 percent (20 of 58) from the floor and 63.2 percent (12 of 19) from the charity stripe. SCSU (12-7, 11-4) finished shooting 42.9 percent (30 of 70) from the field and 78.6 percent from the free-throw line. SCSU forced SMSU into a 23 turnovers, that they turned into 19 points.
Hope Bonlander led SMSU with 18 points (7 of 16) and nine rebounds, while
Lauren Hedlund scored 12 points (5 of 10) and pulled down eight rebounds.
Annessa Rosch added 10 points (4 of 15) and five rebounds.
SCSU started the game grabbing the lead at 7:09 and finished the quarter on a 15-6 run to lead 19-10.
Sariah Cheadle scored a jumper to start the second quarter, but the Huskies went on a 23-2 run to lead 42-14 with :55 left to play in the half and lead 42-16 at the break.
SCSU held a comfortable double-digit lead the second half and went on to win 78-53.
Southwest Minnesota State will face Minnesota Duluth tomorrow at 4 p.m.
