Turnovers doom Mustangs in loss to Vikings

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. —
The Southwest Minnesota State men's basketball recorded 18 turnovers in a 99-75 loss to No. 2 Augustana University in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action on Sunday. Augustana turned the 18 giveaways into 27 points.
 
SMSU (8-5, 4-4 NSIC) finished shooting 48.4 percent from the floor as it made 30 of 62 attempts from the floor and added 10 of 16 from the free-throw line for a 62.5 percent mark. No. 2 Augustana (11-1, 8-0 NSIC) finished scoring on 33 of 70 shots from the field to finish with a 48.4 percentage.
 
Carter Kirk paced the Mustang offense scoring 14 points on 6 of 10 attempts, while Ryan Bruggeman added 12 points on a perfect 6 of 6 from the floor and MJ Delmore scored 11 on 4 of 7 field goals and 3 of 5 from 3-point range.
 
Kirk and Mitch Weg grabbed eight rebounds to lead SMSU, while Bruggeman tallied a pair of steals.
 
Augustana grabbed an early lead and built a six-point lead with 11:44 left to play in the first half before it put on a 17-3 run over the next 7:10 to lead by 20 with 4:34 left in the half.
 
SMSU cut the 20-point deficit down to as few as 18 points, but trailed 49-30 at the break.
 
SMSU shot 37.9 percent in the half scoring on 11 of 29 attempts and 83.3 percent from the free-throw line making 5 of 6. Augustana shot 42.9 percent in the half making 15 of 35 shots form the floor and hitting 9 of 21 from behind the arc for a 42.9 percent mark.
 
SMSU struggled to control the ball in the half as they turned the ball over 13 times, which the Vikings turned into 18 points. The Vikings also pushed the ball as they held a 10-2 point advantage on fast-break points.
 
Following the break, Augustana continued to control the game as it pushed its lead to 20-plus following a layup at 16:32. The Vikings pushed their lead to 30—their largest of the game—with 8:59 left to play and didn't look back as they went on to record their 11th straight win.
 
Southwest Minnesota State men's basketball will host Upper Iowa and Winona State next weekend.
