MARSHALL, Minn. - Upper Iowa finished the game on a 15-2 run in the last three minutes and 37 seconds to defeat Southwest Minnesota State 69-59 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's basketball Friday night.
SMSU (3-12, 1-8 NSIC) finished shooting 42.6 percent on 20 of 47 shots, including 50 percent from 3-point range (8 of 16). UIU (4-11, 3-6 NSIC) shot 41.4 percent on 24 of 58 attempts, while capitalizing on 19 of 23 attempts from the charity stripe.
Sarah Buysse led the Mustangs offense with 16 points on 5 of 10 shooting, including scoring a career-high four 3-pointers.
Hope Bonlander added 14 points on 3 of 7 shooting, while scoring a career-high 8 of 11 from the free-throw line. Bonlander and
Annessa Rosch primed the offense dishing out four assists apiece.
The Peacocks forced SMSU into 23 turnovers, which they turned into 19 points. UIU also controlled the paint holding a 38-16 advantage in points in the paint, while recording a 33-32 rebound advantage.Bonlander led SMSU with eight rebounds, while Buysse pulled down six.
SMSU took control early in the first quarter and built a seven-point lead at 11-4 following a 3-pointer by Rosch with 4:51 left in the quarter. Buysse gave the Mustangs its largest lead of the quarter after hitting a 3-pointer to build an eight-point lead after the first quarter.
In the second quarter, UIU went on a 10-5 run to grab a five-point lead with 4:25 left in the quarter. The Mustangs took the lead back following a 3-pointer by Rosch, that gave them a one-point lead with 2:59 left. Both teams traded baskets and were tied 31-all at the half.
Bonlander led the Mustangs scoring nine points, while Hedlund and Rosch added six at the break. Bonlander also controlled the boards as she pulled down six.

The game was 54-all with 5:44 left to play after a free throw by Buysse. Bonander added a free throw with 3:44 left to play to give SMSU a 59-54 lead. The Peacocks would not go down easy, as they went on a 15-2 run in the last 3:37 to steal a 69-61 victory and to defeat the Mustangs for the ninth-straight time.
