MARSHALL, Minn. – Southwest Minnesota State snapped a three-game losing streak in a big way on Sunday, scoring a season-high five goals in earning a 5-1 victory over the University of Mary in NSIC women's soccer at the Schwan Regional Event Center.
The five goals scored is SMSU's highest output since scoring five versus St. Cloud State on Oct. 4, 2014.
The victory pushes SMSU's record to 4-6 overall, 3-4 in the NSIC, while U-Mary drops to 1-5-2 overall, 1-4-1 NSIC.
Four different Mustangs scored their first goals of the season in today's game.
SMSU started the scoring in eighth minute as
Emily Huddleston scored her second of the season on an assist from
Alexandra Miskowiec.
SMSU pushed the lead to 2-0 in the 16
th minute as
Emily Hofmann netted her first of the season on a pass from Huddleston. The lead grew in the 30
th minute as
Morgan Weyer-Coates scored off a pass from Hofmann to make the score 3-0.
Following a goal from U-Mary's Emily Julian in the 39
th minute, SMSU regained a three-goal advantage just two minutes later as
Morgan Darner scored an unassisted goal to give the Mustangs a 4-1 halftime lead.
The score remained 4-1 until the game's final minute when
Sarah Keppler notched her first goal of the season to push make the score 5-1.
Jessica Craigmile earned the victory in goal, stopping five shots to earn her fourth win of the season.
Southwest Minnesota State continues NSIC play next Friday, Oct. 7, at Upper Iowa starting at 3 p.m.
