Upper Iowa shuts down SMSU on Friday

FAYETTE, IOWA – Upper Iowa University scored a goal in each half to earn a 2-0 victory over Southwest Minnesota State in NSIC women's soccer on Friday afternoon.
 
UIU (6-4, 5-3 NSIC) took a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute on a goal by Birgit Rjinders.
 
The game remained 1-0 until the second half when Lauren Sharp snuck a shot inside the left post past SMSU goalkeeper Jessica Craigmile to give the Peacocks a 2-0 lead.
 
Amanda Hartmann, Fabiana Peiro and Kelli Wentz each had shots on goal for the Mustangs, who drop to 4-7 overall, 3-5 NSIC.
 
Southwest Minnesota State returns home to face Winona State on Sunday starting at 1 p.m. at the Schwan Regional Event Center.
