MARSHALL, Minn. — Winona State jumped out to a 3-0 first half lead and held off a late Southwest Minnesota State charge, to earn a 3-2 victory in NSIC women's soccer on Sunday afternoon at the Schwan Regional Event Center.
The victory continues WSU's dominance over SMSU, improving to 29-0-3 all-time. WSU improves to 6-5-1 overall, 3-5-1 in the NSIC.
WSU's Abby Bohanski started the scoring in the 17
th minute with her team-leading seventh of the season. Meg Riebau then scored back-to-back goals to push the lead to 3-0 with less than 15 minutes left in the opening half. Riebau's second goal came off a corner kick that curled in for her fifth of the season.
SMSU (4-8, 3-6 NSIC) quickly answered in the 35
th minute as
Amanda Hartmann buried a rebound off a shot from
Alexandra Miskowiec for her team-leading fourth goal of the season to make the score 3-1 at halftime.
SMSU scored again in the 65
th minute as
Katelyn Toner drilled a shot from more than 30 yards away that snuck past the WSU goalkeeper to trim the deficit to 3-2. The Mustangs had a handful of chances to tie the contest later in the half but came up empty.
Southwest Minnesota State continues its homestand next Saturday, Oct. 15, taking on St. Cloud State starting at 1 p.m.
