SMSU closes day with victory over defending national champion

MARSHALL, Minn. - The Southwest Minnesota State wheelchair basketball team finished off an impressive day at the SMSU Tournament on Friday night by defeating defending NWBT national champion, Wisconsin-Whitewater, 62-57 in the R/A Facility.

In the victory over UWW, Walter Johnson poured in 22 points on 11 of 21 shooting with eight rebounds, six steals and three assists. David Evjen added 20 points and grabbed 15 rebounds, while Jon Herdon made 7 of 12 shots for 17 points. SMSU trailed 31-22 at halftime, but rallied outscoring UWW 40-26 in the final 20 minutes.

SMSU opened the day beating Missouri 58-49 in its first of four games this weekend in the SMSU tournament.

Walter Johnson led the Mustangs in scoring with 22 on 11 of 19 shooting and also led the team with 13 rebounds in the win over Missouri. David Evjen also had a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds while Jon Herdon had an efficient shooting game going 9 of 12 with 18 points.

In the second game of the day, SMSU earned a forfeit victory over Nebraska-Omaha.

The Mustangs will conclude the tournament on Saturday with a 1:30 pm game versus Illinois at the R/A Facility.
