Fayette, Iowa- Southwest Minnesota State (1-5, 1-1 NSIC) defeated Upper Iowa (0-6, 0-2 NSIC) 79-70 to earn its first victory under first-year head coach,
Tom Webb on Friday night in the Dorman Gymnasium.
Lauren Hedlund had her first double-double of the year with 17 points and 16 boards and
Taylor Silva posted a game high 21 points as the Mustangs reached a season high 79 points.
Sarah Buysse added nine and led the team with five assists on the night.
SMSU went 10-of-15 (67 percent) shooting in the first and led by as many as 18 in the opening quarter. The Mustangs would jump out to a 24-8 lead after one quarter of play. Upper Iowa answered the bell defensively holding the Mustangsto just 30 percent shooting from the field in the second and just 12 points but SMSU went into the break with a 36-29 halftime advantage.
The Mustangs struggled shooting in the third and Upper Iowa held a one point advantage with 5:36 to play in the quarter but six fourth quarter three pointers allowed the Mustangs to salt away their first win of the season on the road.
SMSU will continue its road trip Saturday afternoon as they face the defending NSIC regular season champions Winona State with tip-off scheduled for 4 p.m.
