COLUMBIA, Mo. -- The Southwest Minnesota State University wheelchair basketball team concludes play on Saturday with a pair of losses at the University of Missouri Tournament. SMSU lost 75-56 to UW-Whitewater, before falling to Missouri, 60-40. SMSU finished the two-day event with a 2-2 record after beating Arizona State and Nebraska-Omaha on Friday.
In the setback to UWW,
David Evjen led the Mustangs with 21 points on 10 of 24 shooting, while teammate
Walter Johnson made 9 of 13 field goals with one 3-pointer to finish with 20 points. Johnson also grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds.
SMSU closed the game shooting 43 percent (24 of 56) from the field, including 3 of 9 from 3-point range.
In the final game of the weekend versus Missouri, Evjen and Johnson both recorded double-doubles to lead the charge. Evjen scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, while Johnson had 11 points and 12 rebounds.
SMSU shot just 35 percent (19 of 54) from the field.
SMSU, 11-4 overall, will now be off for the holidays before returning to action on Jan. 13-14, 2017, at a tournament in Wichita, Kan.
