MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State University wheelchair basketball team recorded four wins this past weekend to earn second place at the four-team SMSU Tournament played at the PE Gym.
SMSU (13-14) earned the No. 1 seed in pool play on Saturday with victories over Sioux Falls (70-22), Rolling Timberwolves (49-48) and UNO-Madonna (52-35). The Mustangs closed the day defeating Sioux Falls, 51-26 in the semifinals to advance to Sunday's championship game.
In the championship game, the Rolling Timberwolves gained revenge from Saturday's loss, with a hard-fought 62-56 victory.
David Evjen and
Raymone Brown each scored 19 points in the loss. Evjen also recorded six rebounds and five assists.
In SMSU's first game versus Sioux Falls on Saturday, Brown poured in 20 points on 10 of 14 shooting with six assists, while Evjen added 15 points and five assists.
In the close win over the Timberwolves, Evjen racked up a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds.
Walter Johnson added seven points and eight rebounds. Joel Adam connected on three 3-pointers.
In the win over UNO-Madonna, Evjen poured in a game-high 22 points with 14 rebounds and seven assists.
Ryan Kile chipped in with six points and six rebounds.
Adams scored 12 points on 6 of 9 shooting in the semifinal victory over Sioux Falls. Johnson just missed a double-double with 18 points on 9 of 11 shooting with nine rebounds.
SMSU returns to action on Feb. 12-13 at the University of Illinois Tournament.
