Augustana uses key third quarter run to down SMSU

MARSHALL, Minn. –
Augustana University used a key 12-0 run midway through the third quarter to erase an eight-point deficit and defeat Southwest Minnesota State, 70-60 in NSIC women's basketball on Friday night at the R/A Facility.
 
SMSU (5-20, 3-16 NSIC) built its largest lead of the game at 44-36 with six minutes left in the third quarter following a 3-pointer from Annessa Rosch, but Augustana answered with 12 straight points to key the comeback victory.
 
Augustana (19-6, 13-6 NSIC) finished the game shooting 41 percent with Presley O'Farrell leading the squad with 13 points on 5 of 6 shooting.
 
Rosch led the Mustangs with 14 points, including drilling four 3-pointers. Sarah Buysse added 12 points, while Hope Bonlander added 10 points. SMSU closed the game shooting 41 percent, while making 8 of 18 3-pointers, but committed 21 turnovers.
 
Augustana held the lead for much of the first half, including holding a 21-15 lead after one quarter of play. The Vikings pushed the lead to nine points on two occasions, including 32-23 with five minutes left in the second quarter.
 
SMSU countered with a 7-0 run over the next three minutes—highlighted by a pair of Taylor Silva field goals—to make the score 32-30. Following a field goal by Augustana, SMSU closed the half on a 3-pointer from Rosch and a jumper from Buysse, to give SMSU at 35-34 halftime lead.
 
SMSU shot 43 percent in the opening half, including connecting on 6 of 9 from 3-point range. Augustana shot 41 percent in the half, but were just 2 of 13 on 3-pointers.
 
Southwest Minnesota State closes out its home schedule tomorrow taking on Wayne State at 5 p.m.
