Box Score ST. PAUL — Southwest Minnesota State tied the game 72-72 with 2:38 left to play but Concordia-St. Paul finished the game on a 10-3 run to earn a 82-75 victory in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference men's basketball on Friday night.
SMSU (13-13, 9-12) finished shooting 42 percent (24 of 57) from the floor and 73 percent (19 of 26) from the charity stripe. CSP (12-15, 9-12) shot 46 percent (29 of 63) from the field and 86 percent (19 of 22) from the free-throw line.
SMSU recorded five players in double-figure scoring, as
Mitch Weg,
Joey Bartlett and
Shaun Condon all poured in 13 points.
Ryan Bruggeman added 12 points, while
Turner Moen scored 10.
Carter Kirk and Weg both led SMS pull down seven rebounds, while Bartlett and Moen tallied six.
CSP forced SMSU into 16 turnovers, which it converted into 21 points. The Mustangs controlled the boards holding a 39-32 advantage, but the Golden Bears had a 14-8 lead in second-chance points. CSP also scored 17 fast-break points to SMSU's five.
SMSU jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead to start the game, but CSP came back with six-straight points to take it. Bartlett scored a layup to retake the lead, but the Golden Bears went on a 20-7 run over the next 8:20 to lead by 12 with 8:18 left in the half. SMSU would retaliate with a 20-12 run itself to close the half and trail 38-34 at the break.
In the second half, SMSU started on a 6-2 run to tie the game at 40-all. CSP kept control and built an eight-point lead before SMSU came back to tie the game up again at 55-55 with 10:47 left to play. The Golden Bears again built an eight-point advantage with 7:33 left following back-to-back SMSU turnovers. SMSU fought to tied the game at 72-72 with 2:38 left to play, but CSP finished the game on a 10-3 run to secure the 82-75 victory.
