Dominating pitching leads Newman past SMSU on Sunday

WICHITA, Kan. –
Newman University (Kan.) used solid pitching for the fourth straight game to complete a four-game sweep of Southwest Minnesota State, winning 4-1 and 16-2 on Sunday at McCarthy Field.
 
Newman improved to 10-2 with the victories on Sunday and extended its winning streak to nine straight games, which included a four-game sweep of another NSIC school—Wayne State last weekend.
 
SMSU (0-4) was held to five runs and batted just .163 during the four games.
 
In Sunday's opener, the Mustangs were held to just one hit and had just two batters reach base. Trailing 2-0 in the fourth inning, SMSU scored its lone run on a solo home run by Tanner Picht—his second of the season—the make the score 2-1.
 
The Jets would later push across single runs in the fourth and sixth innings to seal the win. Newman start pitcher Kane McCarthy tossed the complete game with five strikeouts and one walk.
 
Erik Thorvilson (0-1) started on the mound for the Mustangs and allowed three runs on four hits in 3 2/3 innings. He had two strikeouts with two walks and two hit batters.
 
In game two, Newman opened a 5-0 game with four runs in the fifth and seven more runs in the sixth inning.
 
Cole VanderBeek led SMSU's six-hit offense going 2 for 3 with a double and a run scored. VanderBeek led off the sixth inning with a double and later scored on a run-scoring single by Jayden Fleck.
 
SMSU scored its second run in the seventh inning on an RBI single by Shane Sellner to score Derek Branson.
 
Davis Bryan (0-1) started for SMSU and lasted 3 2/3 innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on five hits with five strikeouts, three walks and two hit batters.
 
Southwest Minnesota State returns to action on Saturday, March 5, with a non-conference doubleheader versus Concordia-St. Paul in Tucson, Ariz. The two games are part of team's nine-game spring trip from March 5-12.
