CLERMONT, Fla. — The Southwest Minnesota State softball team closed its spring trip with a split this afternoon. The Mustangs dropped the first game to Walsh University 1-0, before bouncing back with a 4-3 victory over Assumption College.

Against Walsh,
Alex O'Connor started in the circle and pitched the complete game recording five strikeouts, gave up four hits and one run (unearned)

Karmann Carroll paced the Mustang offense with a 2 for 3 performance from the plate, while
Janae Annetts recorded the other hit for SMSU.

Both teams played lockdown defense as neither team scored until the bottom of the fifth. The Cavaliers started the fifth inning with a single and then advanced the runner on a passed ball. Walsh laid down a sac bunt to move the runner to third and eventually came in to score the only run of the game following a sac fly to center. SMSU had a runner on base the in the final two innings, but failed to get them across home.

Shelby Crank started pitching for the Mustangs against Assumption College and hurled 4 2/3 innings before
Athena Golling came in to relieve her and pitched the rest of the game. The two combined for one strikeout, two walks and three runs on eight hits.

The Mustangs combined for 11 hits in the game, led by Carroll,
Mackenzie Clouse, Annetts and
Jazmyne Neely who all recorded two hits. Clouse, Annetts and Neely all recorded an RBI.

Neely started the scoring in the fourth inning following a single that scored
Sam Flack from third. Assumption responded with three runs in the fifth to take a 3-1 lead. In the bottom half of the fifth, SMSU came back with two runs its self to tie the game. The Mustangs scored on a delayed steal and again after Annetts singled.

The Mustangs force Assumption to go down in order in the top of the seventh to have a chance for a walk off. Carroll led off with a double to left center, before
Abbie Decker moved her to third by a sac bunt. Clouse finished the game with a single to left field to score Carroll and to secure the walk-off win.

Southwest Minnesota State (4-11) finished the Spring Games 2-8 and will travel to Dakota Wesleyan for a nonconference doubleheader on Tuesday starting at 1 and 3 p.m.
