SMSU wheelchair basketball earns sixth place finish at nationals

EDINBORO, Pa. – The Southwest Minnesota State University wheelchair basketball team concluded its season on Saturday morning with a 59-35 loss to the University of Missouri in the fifth place game of the National Wheelchair Basketball Tournament hosted by Edinboro University.
 
SMSU finished the tournament with a 1-2 record and closed the season with an overall mark of 15-18.
 
The Mustangs opened the tournament on Thursday with a 64-44 loss to the University of Alabama. SMSU shot just 35 percent in the game and committed 19 turnovers. Joel Adams paced the team with 17 points, while teammate David Evjen added 11 points and seven assists.
 
SMSU bounced back on Friday to earn a 67-61 win over Edinboro. Walter Johnson scored a game-high 28 points on 13 of 17 shooting, while Evjen had a triple-double with 18 points, 19 rebounds and 14 assists.
 
In Saturday's loss to Missouri, the Mustangs shot just 32 percent, with Evjen leading the way with 14 points.
 
At the tournament's award ceremony on Friday, SMSU freshman Joel Adams was named to the NWBA All-Rookie team.
