SMSU splits games in Florida on Monday

CLERMONT, Fla. — The Southwest Minnesota State softball team split today's games in Florida an 11-2 victory over Post University, before falling 3-0 to California University (PA).
 
Against Post (2-3), Alex O'Connor picked up her second win of the season in the circle after pitching a complete game, while striking out 12 batters and giving up just four hits.
 
Sam Flack led the Mustangs with a 2 for 3 plate performance, including recording four RBIs. Janae Annetts also was effective from the dish going 2 for 2 with an RBI. Alex Reak had just one hit, but tallied two RBIs.
 
SMSU opened the scoring in the second and third innings after Taylor Koloc homered to right center in the second to give the Mustangs a 2-0 advantage. Post responded with a sac fly in the bottom of third to cut the Mustang lead to just one. SMSU scored a pair of runs in the fourth and fifth innings to build a 6-1 lead going to the bottom half of the frame. Post scored its final run in the fifth after a past ball, but the Mustangs added three insurance runs in the seventh to secure an 11-2 victory.
 
Against California (PA) (9-1), Shelby Crank hurled a complete game, striking out four batters and gave up seven hits.
 
Mackenzie Clouse finished 2 for 2 for SMSU, while Annetts recorded the third and final hit for the Mustangs.
 
California used a two-run homer in the first inning to grab an early 2-0 lead and another home run in the fifth inning to secure the 3-0 win.
 
Southwest Minnesota State (3-6) will be idle tomorrow and will resume action on Wednesday with a doubleheader at Saint Leo starting at 4 p.m. (CST).
