Mustangs drop pair of games to No. 11 Saint Leo

SAINT LEO, Fla. –
The Southwest Minnesota State softball team fell in a pair of games to No. 11 Saint Leo on Wednesday night. SMSU lost the first game 8-0, before dropping the nightcap 9-1.

In game one, Alex O'Connor started in the circle for SMSU and pitch two inning giving up eight hits and six runs (five earned). Athena Golling game in to relieve her and finished the two innings giving up two runs (both unearned) on two hits. SMSU combined for three strikeouts and four walks.

The Mustangs recorded three hits, coming from Sam Flack, Taylor Koloc and Jazmyne Neely.

Saint Leo started the scoring in the first inning with three runs, before adding to its lead in the second inning with three more runs to lead 6-0.

The Lions added two runs in the fourth inning to secure  the 8-0 victory by the run rule.

Game two, Shelby Crank started in the circle for the Mustangs and pitched the 5 2/3 innings giving up 12 hits and nine runs (four earned), while striking out five.

The Mustangs total five hits in the loss, led by Mackenzie Clouse who belted a homerun. Koloc, Sam Flack, Chavez and Karmann Carroll added the remaining hits.

Saint Leo started the scoring against in the first inning with three runs and added a pair of runs in the third inning to lead 5-0.

Mackenzie Clouse broke the drought with a deep home run to left field in the top of the fifth to give SMSU its first run of the night.

SLU responded with an unearned run in the bottom of the inning to continue to lead 6-1. In the sixth, the Lions added a run before doubling to left field to score two more runs to win 9-1 by the run rule.

Southwest Minnesota State will be in action tomorrow vs Saginaw Valley State (MI) and Edinboro at 4 and 6 p.m., respectfully. Both times are CST.
