TUCSON, Ariz. – No. 2 ranked St. Cloud State broke open a 3-2 lead with a six-run sixth inning and went on to earn a 15-4 non-conference victory over Southwest Minnesota State on Tuesday night at the Tucson Invitational played at the Kino Sports Complex.
SCSU (7-0), which finished with 21 base hits, was led by Brandon Arnold who was 4 for 6 with two runs scored.
SCSU scored a pair of unearned runs in the second, but SMSU (1-8) quickly answered in the bottom of the inning to tie the score.
Shane Sellner started the inning with a double and later scored on a wild pitch.
Cole VanderBeek then tied the game with a two-out triple to score
Michael Marchese.
SCSU took a 3-2 lead in the third on a solo home run by Kyle Sorensen, before putting together the big sixth inning to build a 9-2 lead. SCSU then added a single run in the seventh and five more in the ninth.
SMSU scored its final two runs in the ninth inning on a sac fly
Jared Tschetter, while
Jake Schultz scored on a wild pitch.
Freshman
Connor Johnson (0-1) made his first career start and tossed 5 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs (five earned) on 10 hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
Southwest Minnesota State will have Wednesday off before returning to action on Thursday with a doubleheader versus Malone University (Ohio) starting at 5 p.m. at the Kino Sports Complex.
