ALEXANDRIA, Minn. – Wayne State used strong pitching to sweep past Southwest Minnesota State in an NSIC doubleheader on Friday night, winning 9-0 and 10-3.
 
In the opener, Mitch Ragan tossed a four-hit shutout with seven strikeouts, while in game two four WSC pitchers combined to record 13 strikeouts.
 
The games were relocated to Alexandria due to poor weather conditions in Wayne, Neb. The teams conclude the series tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
 
In game one, Wayne State (11-24, 8-12 NSIC) scored a pair of runs in the second and then blew the game wide open in the fourth scoring seven runs on five hits and three SMSU errors to build a 9-0 lead.
 
Kyle Graves finished 2 for 2 to pace the SMSU offense.
 
Alex Jorgensen (0-6) took the loss, allowing nine runs (seven earned) on eight hits. 
 
In game two, WSC used another big fourth inning, this time plating five runs on seven hits to take a 7-0 lead.
 
SMSU (6-29, 4-16 NSIC) finally cracked the scoreboard in the sixth as 
Jon Leighton crushed a solo home run over the left field to make the score 7-1.
 
WSC pushed the lead to 10-1 after seven, but Leighton smacked a two-run homer in the eighth to make the score 10-3.
 
Connor Johnson (0-4) started for SMSU and lasted 4 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs on 10 hits with four walks, two hit batters and two strikeouts.
 
SMSU closed the game with 10 hits, with Leighton finishing 3 for 5, 
Derek Branson was 3 for 4, while 
Kody Larson finished 2 for 4.
