MARSHALL, Minn. — The Southwest Minnesota State softball team swept past St. Cloud State on Saturday in NSIC softball winning the first game 6-1, before picking up the sweep with a 8-0 victory in six innings in the final game.
St. Cloud State falls to 22-19 overall, 8-8 in the NSIC, while SMSU improves to 13-20 and 9-7 in loop play.
Alex O'Connor (5-7) picked up the win in game one, pitching the complete game giving up four hits, one run, while striking out nine.
Sam Flack led SMSU with three hits, including an extra base hit and an RBI.
Jazmyne Neely and
Victoria Brooks both added to the offense with a pair of hits, while Brooks tallied an RBI.
SMSU started the scoring in the first frame with a pair of runs to lead 2-0 early. SCSU responded with a run in the second—its only run of the game—to trail by one.
The Mustangs controlled the rest of the game adding it their lead in the third, fourth and fifth innings to lead 6-1.
St. Cloud State put a runner on in the top of the seventh, but a pair of strikeouts by O'Connor finished the game and secured the victory.
SMSU recorded nine hits in the win, while leaving 10 runners on base. SCSU finished with four hits and left four stranded.
In game two,
Athena Golling (5-4) grabbed the win hurling the six-inning game giving up just two hits and striking out one.
Janae Annetts and
Taylor Chavez led the Mustangs with multiple hits, including Chavez tallying three RBIs.
The final game was all Mustangs as they scored again in the first inning before opening the game up in the fourth scoring six runs to lead 7-0.
Golling held the Huskies to just one hit in the final two innings, as the Mustangs scored a run in the bottom of the sixth win 8-0 by the run rule.
The Mustangs racked up nine hits and seven RBIs in the win. The Huskies recorded just two hits and left two on base.
Southwest Minnesota State will continue action at Mustang Field tomorrow with a doubleheader against Minnesota Duluth starting at noon. The doubleheader will be part of a StrikeOut Cancer with fans encouraged to donate for every strikeout thrown by the SMSU pitching staff.
