SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Augustana University used a pair of strong pitching performances and hit three home runs to earn a doubleheader sweep over Southwest Minnesota State on Friday at Ronken Field.

Augustana (34-14, 25-7 NSIC), ranked No. 5 in this week's NCAA Central Region rankings, won the opener 6-0, before holding on for a 4-2 victory in game two.

In game one, Ryan Hamilton tossed five shutout innings with eight strikeouts to lead the Vikings to the victory.

It was the seventh time this season SMSU (8-33, 6-20 NSIC) has been shutout. SMSU threatened to score in nearly every inning, leaving nine runners on base, including two in three different innings.

Augustana hit a three-run home run and a solo home run in the first inning to build a 4-0 lead.

SMSU starter
Alex Jorgensen (0-7) tossed all six innings, allowing 10 hits, six runs (five earned) with five strikeouts and five walks.

SMSU finished with six hits in the opener with
Tanner Luebke going 2 for 4.

In game two,
Erik Thorvilson (0-3) was the tough-luck loser for the Mustangs, tossing the complete game, allowing just six hits to one of the top hitting teams in the country. He struck out a career-high nine and walked just one. Augustana entered the weekend ranked third in Division II in slugging percentage, fourth in batting average and fourth in runs scored.

The Vikings scored a run in the fourth and then used a big two-out rally in the fifth to take a 4-0 lead. With two outs, Augustana put two runners on with a hit by pitch and single. Justin Warne then connected on a three-run homer to push the margin to 4-0.

SMSU cut the lead in half in the sixth as
Jon Leighton scored on a passed ball, before
Kyle Graves came through with an RBI single to score
Shane Sellner.

The Mustangs held a 7-6 hit advantage in game two, but struck out 12 times.

Graves and Sellner both led the Mustangs with two hits apiece.

Southwest Minnesota State and Augustana complete the four-game series tomorrow with a doubleheader at Alumni Field in Marshall starting at 1:30 p.m. SMSU's three seniors—
Kyle Graves,
Travis McGlauflin and
Colton Smith—will be honored prior to game two.
