MOORHEAD, Minn.— The Southwest Minnesota State women's soccer team lost its first road match of the year losing to MSU Moorhead 2-1 Saturday afternoon.
SMSU outshot the Dragons 5-3 in the first half but it was MSU Moorhead who opened the scoring in the 20
th minute with a goal from Jessica Johnson, assisted by Megan Selanders.
The match remained 1-0 until the 85
th minute when Annika Greaney scored an unassisted goal to give the Dragons a 2-0 lead.
The Mustangs continued to hammer the MSU Moorhead goal throughout the match putting up 18 total shots and eight shots on goal for the match, but were unable to beat Dragons' goalkeeper, Reagan VonBerge, for the first 89 minutes of play.
SMSU finally broke through in the 90
th minute with
Emily Huddleston's first goal of the year, but was too late to affect the outcome of the match that ended in a 2-1 loss for the Mustangs.
The loss drops SMSU to 2-3 overall (1-1 NSIC) while MSU Moorhead improves to 2-2 (1-1) on the season.
Southwest Minnesota State will continue its road trip tomorrow afternoon in Aberdeen, S.D. when they take on Northern State at 1 p.m.
