ABERDEEN, S.D.— The Southwest Minnesota State women's soccer team improved to 2-1 in NSIC play after
Amanda Hartmann scored a game winning goal and her second of the match in extra time for the Mustangs' second overtime win of the season.
The Mustangs opened the scoring in the 29
th minute when
Alexandra Miskowiec found the net for her second goal of the season. SMSU doubled its lead just two minutes later when Hartmann scored her first goal of the match in the 31
st minute.
The first half ended with the Mustangs ahead 2-0 and holding an 8-5 advantage in shots and a 3-0 lead in shots on goal.
Northern State came out strong after halftime and almost stole one goal back less than a minute into the second half and would end up taking the first eight shots of the second half. The Wolves would find the net for the first time when Karli Harney converted on a penalty in the 61
st minute to make the Mustangs' lead 2-1.
SMSU was unable to hold onto the one goal advantage through the whole second half, conceding an equalizing goal in the dying moments when Sammie Zgutowicz found Setphany Estrada on a counter attack who then found the net to even the score at 2-2.
After 90 minutes, the score remained tied 2-2 and SMSU headed into its second overtime match in as many weeks. Northern State would fire the first two shots of the overtime period but Hartmann dribbled through the penalty area and connected on a shot in the 95
th minute to give the Mustangs the 3-2 win.
SMSU improves to 3-3 (2-1 NSIC) on the season while Northern State suffers its first loss and is now 4-1 (2-1 NSIC) on the season.
The Mustangs will continue their conference schedule at home on Friday at 4 p.m. when they face Concordia-St. Paul.
