MARSHALL, Minn. —The fifth ranked Southwest Minnesota State University volleyball team dominated Sioux Falls to notch its first home win of the season with a sweep winning, 25-10, 25-16, 25-18.
The Mustangs had a strong defensive performance as
Amber Messner finished with 12 digs and
Kaylee Burmeister added another 13. SMSU had nine total blocks and held Sioux Falls to a .097 hitting percentage as a team.
Southwest Minnesota State came out of the gates strong again, dominating the first set 25-10 with the help of 6 kills from
Sarah Parker.
Sioux Falls kept the second set closer with their only two leads of the match, but the Mustangs eventually pulled away with 6 kills from Parker and 5 from Reiss.
The Mustangs had another decisive set in the third with the help of five team blocks, closing out the match with a 25-18 win. The Mustangs never trailed in the first and final sets and Parker led the team in kills (14) and blocks (5) to help SMSU improve its overall record to 8-3 with a conference mark of 2-1.
Taylor Reiss had her third straight double double, finishing with 13 kills and 12 digs as well as 2 service aces. SMSU hit .389 as a team as
Eisha Oden added another 8 kills in addition to 3 blocks.
The loss drops Sioux Falls to 6-5 on the year and 0-3 in NSIC matches.
SMSU will be on the road this weekend with a match on Friday at the University of Mary at 7 p.m. followed by a match on Saturday afternoon at Minot State at 3 p.m.
