MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State soccer team captured its first win Saturday afternoon at home beating Washburn (Kan.) 1-0.
Brenna Giddings scored her first goal of the season off of a corner kick in the 63
rd minute.
Emily Hofmann sent in a corner that bounced around the six yard box several times before Giddings cleaned up to give the Mustangs the 1-0 advantage.
Both teams saw an equal amount of the ball in the first half which ended in a 0-0 deadlock. Heavy winds and strong defensive units kept either team from creating many scoring opportunities as Washburn ended the first half with a 1-0 advantage in shots on goal.
The Mustangs got their offense moving in the second half with eight of their nine shots coming in the second period.
Jessica Craigmile had a big save in the 50
th minute to preserve her first career shutout. She finished the match with three saves for the game.
SMSU will now host Central Missouri on Wednesday at 7 p.m. to wrap up their non-conference schedule before traveling to Sioux Falls on Friday for their first NSIC match of the year.
