SMSU win streak comes to an end on last-second 3-pointer by UIU

MARSHALL, Minn. –
Upper Iowa snapped No. 19/22 Southwest Minnesota State's seven-game winning streak with a thrilling 99-96 overtime victory on Saturday night at the R/A Facility.
 
UIU's Carson Parker hit two 3-pointers in the final 27 seconds of overtime, including the game-winner with 0.2 seconds remaining, to lift the Peacocks to their second victory over SMSU this season.
 
UIU improves to 11-5 overall, 8-2 NSIC, while SMSU falls to 13-2 overall, 8-2 NSIC.
 
SMSU shot 53 percent (38 of 72) from the field in the game, but made just 13 of 26 free throws, which proved to be the difference in the game. UIU shot 50 percent (31 of 62) from the field, including 11 of 20 from 3-point range, and also was outstanding from the free throw line, connecting on 26 of 32 attempts.
 
SMSU was led by Joey Bartlett, who poured in 24 points on 9 of 12 shooting, including 4 of 6 from 3-point range. Mitch Weg recorded a double-double, with 13 points and 13 rebounds, with teammate KJ Davis adding 13 points.
 
Jordan Hay paced the Peacocks with 26 points and 13 rebounds, while Parker added 16 points and five assists.
 
SMSU had a chance to win the game at the end of regulation, but Michael Lee's 3-point shot from the left corner was blocked sending the game to overtime.
 
In the extra frame, Bartlett hit a jumper with 2:26 remaining to give the Mustangs a 94-91 advantage. SMSU then failed to score for more than two minutes and UIU answered with a layup by Hay and Carson's 3-pointer with 27 seconds remaining to take a 96-94 lead.
 
On the ensuing SMSU possession, Weg was fouled with nine seconds left, but missed two free throws. Following the second miss, Weg was able to come down with the rebound and was fouled again with seven seconds left. He connected on both attempts to tie the game at 96, setting up the final shot by Parker.
 
SMSU was outrebounded 21-18 in the opening half and made just 2 of 7 free throws as the teams played to a 39-39 halftime tie.
 
The teams played a tight second half before SMSU used a 10-2 run to build its largest lead of the game at 81-73 with 4:54 left in regulation. UIU came right back and rallied with a 9-0 run to regain the lead with 2:56 remaining on a Parker 3-pointer.
 
UIU would later take an 86-83 advantage with 1:21 remaining, but a Drew Osmundson layup with 1:07 left cut the deficit to 86-85. Following a missed UIU 3-pointer, Taylor Schafer put SMSU back in front with a jumper with 37 seconds, before Parker hit one of two free throws with 25 seconds remaining to tie the game.
 
Southwest Minnesota State returns to action next Friday, Jan. 13, with a road match-up versus Minnesota Crookston starting at 8 p.m.
