ST. CLOUD, Minn.- Southwest Minnesota State conceded an 84th minute goal to St. Cloud State that forced extra time as St. Cloud State found a 96th minute game-winner and came away with a 2-1 overtime win on Sunday afternoon at Husky Stadium.
Amanda Hartmann gave SMSU an early lead with an 11th minute goal to put the Mustangs ahead for the first time in seven matches. Hartmann's goal, her second in as many games and third of the season, was assisted by
Emily Huddleston.
St. Cloud State held a 5-4 advantage in total shots at halftime but it was the Mustangs who went into the break holding a 1-0 lead.
St. Cloud State finished the match with 12 shots on goal and kept consistent pressure on the SMSU net in the second half but the Mustangs held onto their 1-0 lead into the final stages of the match.
The Huskies would break through however, in the 84th minute when Hannah Marion scored to to even the match at 1-1. The two teams played to a stalemate in the final six and a half minutes, sending the game into overtime.
Just over five minutes into the extra frame, Kate Murphy found the ball in space for St. Cloud State and put the ball past
Jenna Meyer to give the Huskies the 2-1 overtime win. Meyer, who fell less than ten minutes shy from finishing off her first career win and shutout, finished the match with 10 saves.
SMSU will play back-to-back games again next weekend as they host Minnesota Crookston and Bemidji State next Saturday and Sunday.
