Mustangs capture first win against Minnesota Crookston

Box Score
MARSHALL, Minn.- Amanda Hartmann found the net for Southwest Minnesota State for a fourth straight match which proved to be the game-winner in a 1-0 victory over Minnesota Crookston on Saturday afternoon at the Schwan Regional Event Center.

The Mustangs looked dangerous on offense in the first half as their forwards, Amanda Hartmann, Emily Huddleston and Alli Miskowiec found space behind the Golden Eagles' defense. Amanda Hartmann ripped a shot to the near post the just missed wide in the 22nd minute as SMSU began to look threatening.

Emily Huddleston would follow up shortly after with two shot attempts within the Golden Eagles' penalty area while Hartmann added another attempt before the match was stopped in the 34th minute due to a lightning delay.

Following the stoppage in play, both teams failed to find the net in the final 11 minutes of the first half as the teams headed into the break in a 0-0 deadlock. SMSU finished the first half with a 6-1 advantage in total shots and a 3-1 advantage in shots on goal.

Despite attacking into a strong headwind, the Mustangs attack again looked strong to begin the second half.

Just after the clock passed the 64 minute mark, a perfect through ball found Miskowiec who raced across the endline and put a strong cross across the six-yard box that found Hartmann, who then buried the ball past Olivia Puttin to give SMSU the 1-0 advantage. The assist was the first of the season for Miskowiec while the goal was Hartmann's fourth of the season.

SMSU was unable to build on its lead but the Mustangs did create more quality chances in the final 26 minutes of the second half finishing with seven shots on net for the game.

The Mustangs' defense and goalkeeper, Jenna Meyer, held onto the shutout all the way to the 90 minute mark to give Meyer her first career win and first career clean sheet.

Southwest Minnesota State will look to carry its momentum into its match tomorrow afternoon when it hosts No. 21 Bemidji State beginning at 2 p.m.
