MARSHALL, Minn.- Southwest Minnesota State found an equalizer after giving up an early goal but ultimately came up short as No. 21 Bemidji State defeated SMSU, 4-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Schwan Regional Event Center.
Bemidji State got the scoring started early as Rachael Norton put across a ball in the fourth minute from the left wing that found Alanna Mattson who put away the cross to give the Beavers a 1-0 lead.
The Mustangs continued to give up possession in their own half in the game's early stages but on a counter in the 21st minute,
Alli Miskowiec beat the keeper to free ball and smashed home an equalizer for SMSU to bring that match back even at 1-1. The goal was the second of the season for Miskowiec who also had her first assist of the season on Saturday against UMC.
Just six minutes later, Alanna Mattson burried a ball into the top right corner of
Jenna Meyer's net to give Bemidji State the lead back at 2-1.
The Beavers finished with an 11-4 advantage in total shots in the first half as BSU took its 2-1 lead into the halftime break.
In the 61st minute, Miranda Famestad fed a ball through to Allyson Smith who put away another Beavers' goal to increase Bemidji State's lead to 3-1.
Dani Nelson capitalized with a strong shot from the edge of the penalty area in the 70th minute to give BSU a 4-1 lead that it would carry through to the final whistle.
Bemidji State increases what is a progam best unbeaten streak to 15 games to start the season.
SMSU will play its final road match of the 2017 season on Friday night as it travels to face Wayne State before hosting Senior Night and season finale on Sunday afternoon against Augustana.
