MARSHALL, Minn.- Taylor Reiss and
Kaylee Burmeister combined for 37 kills but No. 1 Southwest Minnesota State (21-2, 13-2 NSIC) was unable to overcome a 2-0 deficit as No. 2 Concordia-St. Paul took sole possession of first place in the NSIC with a 25-20, 25-16, 10-25, 25-21 win over SMSU on Saturday afternoon in the PE Gym.
The loss snaps a 16-match home winning streak which was tied for the longest home win streak since 2004.
Reiss had a match-high 22 kills with a .439 hitting percentage while Burmeister added another 15 kills with a .317 hitting percentage in the Mustangs' first home loss of the year.
Megan Larson had 46 assists and 14 digs in addition to one block assist.
The Mustangs finished with five service aces in the match but also suffered from six serving errors.
Brooklyn Lewis had 20 kills on 40 swings for Concordia-St. Paul as the Golden Bears finished with 60 kills as a team and a .311 hitting percentage.
SMSU fell behind early in the opening set as the Golden Bears jumped out to a 10-2 lead to begin the match. The Mustangs climbed back into the first game to get within two points on a 5-1 run that cut the CSP lead to 16-14.
SMSU would give up a pair of service aces while committing three serving errors that helped CSP to its 25-20 win to take a one set lead.
The second set was more tightly contested before the Golden Bears went on a 6-1 run to go ahead 17-11. The Mustangs had their lowest attack percentage of the match in the second set as they hit just .125 and fell behind by two sets.
The Mustangs came out of the intermission strong in the third set with a 14-4 run to begin the third game. SMSU held the Golden Bears to a .000 hitting percentage while finishing with a .611 hitting percentage on the way to a dominant 25-10 win to get back within one set.
The fourth and most tightly contested set of the match saw 17 total tied scores and six lead changes.
After giving up the lead on back-to-back points, CSP took a timeout down 20-19 and responded with two points of its own to go ahead 21-20. SMSU Head Coach,
Terry Culhane, then took a timeout which was followed by a kill from
Caedyn Reinhardt to even the match at 21-21. Mariya Sampson, who finished the match with 15 kills for CSP, then had four straight kills to end the match.
SMSU will return to action early next week as they take on Sioux Falls on Tuesday night at 6 p.m., in the PE Gym.
