Upper Iowa steals a close one goal win

Box Score

MARSHALL, Minn.-
Southwest Minnesota State created some of its best scoring chances that it's seen all season but Upper Iowa's defense held the Mustangs off of the scoresheet in a 1-0 win for the Peacocks on Friday evening at the Schwan Regional Event Center.

The Mustangs finished with four shots on goal and looked the more likely team early on as Emily Huddleston, who finished with three total shots in the match, created several close scoring opportunities.

Upper Iowa would finish the match with a 24-7 advantage in total shots but the two sides finished tied at 4-4 in shots on goal.

After fending off several waves of Mustangs' attacks, Upper Iowa broke a scoreless deadlock with a 28th minute goal from Jordyn Ostrowski, her fourth goal of the season.

Upper Iowa had an attempted shot cleared but not far enough as Ostrowski found the ball at her feet and put the ball into Jenna Meyer's net from near the edge of the penalty area. Meyer would finish the contest with three saves and the lone goal given up.

SMSU was unable to create as many scoring chances in the second half as it finished with just two total shots in the second period.

Upper Iowa was able to kill off the clock even after a long injury timeout ended with a Peacock defender being carted off the field.

SMSU will continue to push for its first win of the season this Sunday as they travel to play at Winona State beginning at 1 p.m.
