Mustangs' streak snapped in four set loss at No. 13 Northern State

Box Score
ABERDEEN, S.D.-
Southwest Minnesota State entered the day having not trailed in sets at any point through 16 matches but fell behind 2-0 to No. 13 Northern State as the Wolves came away with a 25-22, 25-23, 18-25, 25-22 win over the top ranked Mustangs on Saturday afternoon in the Wachs Arena.

The loss snaps what was the second longest win streak in SMSU history and ends the best win streak to start a season in program history.

The win is also the first for NSU over the Mustangs since 2003 as SMSU had won 23 consecutive matchups.

SMSU had more kills than Northern State in both the first and second sets but also had a combined 16 attack errors in the two games to fall behind 2-0 for the first time in a match this season.

The Mustangs hit just .209 for the match in the loss after hitting just .188 and .169 in the first and second sets respectively on Saturday afternoon.

Taylor Reiss and Kaylee Burmeister were a big reason why the Mustangs looked like forcing a fifth set as they combined for 45 kills and 45 digs for SMSU.

Reiss finished the match with a season high 28 kills and 25 digs while Burmeister finished with 19 kills and 21 digs.

Megan Larson had 53 assists and nine digs in the match while Brooke Borchardt and Sarina Smith each had seven kills.

Dani Potter had 12 digs as the Mustangs' libero and Erin Corrigan added 10 digs from her back row position.

Following a rare slow start from the Mustangs in the first two sets, SMSU looked like they might force a fifth set with a dominant third set win (25-18) and a 7-2 run to take a 15-12 lead in the fourth.

NSU would battle back to keep the set close and went on a 3-0 run to take a 21-19 lead.

SMSU would get one point back out of a timeout and back-to-back points moments later to tie the set at 22-22 before a 3-0 run from the Wolves ended the match with a 25-22 win in set four for Northern State.

SMSU will return to action next weekend as they host Minot State followed by U-Mary next Friday and Saturday in the PE Gym.
