Mustangs clinch home playoff match in sweep over UMC

MARSHALL, Minn.- No. 4 Southwest Minnesota State clinched a home playoff match in next week's NSIC Tournament with a resounding, 25-20, 25-15, 25-10 sweep of Minnesota Crookston on Friday night in the PE Gym.

The Mustangs finished with a .331 attack percentage in their 13th win in straight sets this season. SMSU, which entered the match holding opponents to a .160 hitting percentage, held the Golden Eagles to just .084 hitting on the night. Minnesota Crookston was held to single-digit kills in all three sets including just five kills as a team in set two.

Taylor Reiss, the NSIC Player of the Year, floored 18 kills with a .455 hitting percentage in addition to 13 digs for her 14th double-double on the season. Reiss also had two solo blocks and one block assist in Friday night's win.

Megan Larson, after being honored pregame for Senior Night, tallied 40 assists with eight digs and one block assist for SMSU. Fellow senior, Brooke Borchardt, had seven kills with two blocks for the Mustangs.

Sarina Smith had 10 kills in addition to one block assist and Kaylee Burmeister added another eight kills and nine digs.

Despite jumping out to a 4-1 lead, the Mustangs looked shaky early as the Golden Eagles used a 7-3 run to go ahead 8-7 early. The Mustangs responded with three straight kills that started an 11-4 run which put SMSU ahead 18-12. The Mustangs finished with 18 kills in game one which SMSU went on to win 25-20.

The first set would prove to be the closest of the match as SMSU came out strong in the second set and never looked back. The Mustangs jumped ahead 5-0 to force a quick timeout from the Minnesota Crookston bench. The Golden Eagles to five kills and .056 hitting as a team in the second set which SMSU won 25-15.

The Mustangs were dominant early again in the third set as a 10-2 run to open the game forced another Golden Eagels' timeout. SMSU hit .615 as a group in the third set and never trailed for a second straight set on the way to a 25-10 win to give the Mustangs' their eighth home win of the season.

SMSU will now host its final home match of the regular season as it takes on Bemidji State on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
