COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Southwest Minnesota State suffered four losses this past weekend at the University of Missouri Tournament.
On Friday, SMSU lost to Wisconsin-Whitwater, 81-55, before suffering a 62-53 setback to Auburn University. On Saturday, Edinboro defeated SMSU, 60-47, before Alabama earned a 76-67 victory in SMSU's final game of the weekend.
In the opener versus UWW, Jesus Villa and Matthew Talbot each scored 16 points, while
Ryan Kile added 10 points. SMSU shot 44 percent from the field, but was just 1 of 9 from 3-point range.
In the loss to Auburn, Villa poured in a team-high 22 points with Talbot chipping in with 12 points. Villa and
Ezekiel Ramudzi each pulled down seven rebounds. The Mustangs shot 39 percent from the field, but struggled from the free throw line, making just 6 of 17.
On Saturday, Villa scored 22 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while Talbot added 13 points in the loss to Edinboro. SMSU shot 33 percent from the field, including 2 of 17 from 3-point range.
In the final game of the weekend versus Alabama, Villa made 11 of 26 shots and finished with 34 points. He connected on four 3-pointers in the loss. Talbot finished 5 of 11 from the field and closed with 15 points.
SMSU, 4-7 overall, returns to action on Jan. 12-13, 2018, in Wichita, Kansas.
