DULUTH, Minn.- Caleigh Rodning scored a season high 19 points but the Southwest Minnesota State (2-5, 1-3 NSIC ) offense struggled through long stretches in a 72-57 loss at Minnesota Duluth (5-1, 3-0) on Friday night in the Romano Gymnasium.
Rodning went 6 of 9 from the floor for SMSU and added five rebounds and two assists in addition to one steal on the defensive end.
Sammy Kozlowski had a game high 16 points and dished out eight assists as three Minnesota Duluth players reached double figures.
The Mustangs missed their first nine three point attempts and finished the night just 2 of 17 (12 percent) from behind the arc. SMSU shot 37 percent (20 of 54) from the field as a team on the night.
SMSU suffered from 21 turnovers as the Bulldogs held a 21-4 advantage in points off of turnovers.
The Mustangs grinded out a 30-28 advantage in points in the paint but UMD outrebounded SMSU, 40-33 while grabbing 16 offensive rebounds.
UMD jumped out early with a 17-3 run during the first quarter, finishing with a 22-9 lead after the first ten minutes of play.
The Bulldogs then outscored SMSU 19-16 in the next frame as the Mustangs shot just 29 percent from the field as a team in the second quarter.
SMSU opened the second half on a short run to cut the Bulldogs' lead to single digits but UMD then went on an 18-9 run into the opening minutes of the fourth quarter to stifle the Mustangs' comeback attempt.
Southwest Minnesota State will cap off its weekend road trip tomorrow afternoon when it plays at St. Cloud State beginning at 4 p.m.
