TUCSON, Ariz. – The Southwest Minnesota State baseball team picked up its first doubleheader sweep of the season on Friday, defeating the University of Jamestown, 9-7 and 7-3, at the Tucson Invitational played at the Kino Sports Complex.

SMSU has won three straight games and improves to 4-4 overall.

In the opener, SMSU rallied with a four-run sixth inning to earn the 9-7 victory. Trailing 7-5 in the home half of the sixth, the Mustangs scored their first run on a throwing error by the Jimmies, that plated pinch-runner
Jared Tschetter. With runners on second and third and one out, Brian Redemski smacked a two-run double to give SMSU the lead at 8-7. Redemske would later score on a sac fly from
Brady Lanoue to give the Mustangs a two-run cushion.

Jamestown (14-7) would put two runners in scoring position in the seventh, but SMSU closer
Alex Jorgensen secured the victory with a strikeout and fly out for his second save of the season.

Jamestown jumped on the board early with a three-run top of the first inning, but SMSU came right back with two runs in the bottom of the first.
Derek Branson hit a sac fly for SMSU's first run, while
Shane Sellner delivered a two-out RBI single to make the score 3-2.

Trailing 4-2 in the third, SMSU took its first lead of the game with a three-run frame. Sellner started the rally with a run-scoring single and was followed by an RBI triple by
Liam Lopez.
Cole VanderBeek closed the rally with an RBI single to push SMSU into the lead.

The Jimmies regained the lead with a two-run fourth and then added another run in the sixth before the Mustangs mounted their rally.

SMSU finished the opener with 12 hits with Sellner, Branson, VanderBeek and Lopez all collecting two hits each.

Chase Meyer (1-0) picked up the victory with 2 2/3 innings of relief, allowing one unearned run on two hits with three strikeouts.

Erik Thorvilson started on the mound for SMSU and lasted 3 1/3 innings giving up six runs (three earned) on five hits.

In game two, SMSU exploded with a big first inning, scoring six runs on four hits and taking advantage of three Jamestown errors. Redemske started the rally with a two-run double, before SMSU used a walk, a strikeout-wild pitch and hit by pitch to load the bases. Jamestown then committed a pair of errors moments later to score all three runs and give SMSU a 5-0 lead.
Spencer Rudnik capped the big inning with an RBI single.

Jamestown would score two runs off SMSU starter
Jeremy Stouffer in the first, but the freshman right-hander kept the Jimmies in check over the next three-plus innings to pick up his first collegiate victory. Stouffer finished tossing 4 2/3 innings allowing three runs on six hits with one strikeout and one walk.
Shawn Williams was outstanding in relief, picking up his first save of the season, throwing 2 1/3 shutout innings giving up just one hit with a pair of strikeouts.

SMSU added an insurance run in the sixth as Lopez singled, stole second and later scored on a Rudnik single.

Rudnik finished 2 for 3 with two RBIs to pace SMSU's eight-hit attack.

Southwest Minnesota State continues play on Saturday night taking on Valley City State (N.D.) starting at 8:30 CST.
