WHITEWATER, Wis. – The Southwest Minnesota State University wheelchair basketball team concluded its 2016-17 season on Friday night with a 58-49 loss to the University of Missouri at the National Intercollegiate Wheelchair Basketball Tournament.
SMSU, the No. 7 seed heading into the weekend, finished the tournament with a 1-2 record and earned a sixth place finish. The Mustangs conclude the season with a record of 18-11.
In the setback to Missouri,
David Evjen closed his outstanding Mustang career with a team-high 23 points on 10 of 19 shooting. He also grabbed eight rebounds and dished out six assists.
SMSU opened play on Thursday night with a 61-46 loss to No. 2 seed Wisconsin-Whitewater, but bounced back Friday morning with a 60-47 victory over No. 6 seed Edinboro (Pa.) in the consolation round.
In the loss to UWW, Evjen poured in 25 points, connecting on 12 of 28 field goals.
Walter Johnson scored 11 points, while
Ryan Kile chipped in with eight points.
Johnson had a huge game in the victory over Edinboro, pouring in 40 points on 15 of 20 shooting from the field, while making nine of 11 free throws. He also grabbed a team-high 15 rebounds.
Following the tournament, a pair of Mustangs picked up honors from the NIWBT. Johnson earned second team All-American accolades, while
John Herndon—who passed away last month—was honored with the Frank Basile Sportsmanship Award.
